I found this term on a profile at a personals site — the woman described in the profile was a fan of “puppet opera.” My previous acquaintance with puppet opera comes entirely from the movie Being John Malkovich.
So I looked up puppet opera on Wikipedia and there is a serious and thriving history of puppet opera. Who knew?
